Dr. James "Jim" Herbert Growney Jr. passed away peacefully Friday, April 7th 2017 at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. He was born in Rochester, New York to James and Doris Growney. The oldest brother of 9 children, his attribute as a leader, caretaker, and healer was formed from a very young age. Jim is a graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School, Bellarmine University and Kansas City University. He married the love of his life, Carol Shore, on March 26, 1966, in Kansas City, MO. Jim was an army veteran of the Vietnam war, serving as a surgeon stationed along the river in Moc Hoa, Vietnam. He was a recipient of the bronze star. For decades, Jim touched the lives of many through his career being an anesthesiologist, a position that brought him the most rewarding fulfillment. Jim was a humanitarian, taking several trips to Guatemala throughout his life with a team of doctors to practice in villages with an absence in modern medicine. An avid golfer, he often took seasonal trips to Ireland, to enjoy some of the most exceptional courses in the world. All who knew Jim regarded him with possessing every quality of a gentleman, and an individual who truly lived for others. He is survived by his wife Carol, three children Shannon, James III (Kristi), and Sean (Rene), and grandchildren Matthew, James IV, Olivia, Molly, Ella, Sam, and Eden. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 19th at St. Robert of Newminster Parish, 6477 Ada Dr. with Fr. Leonard Sudlik as Celebrant. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, April 18th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service. The family suggests memorial contributions can be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, in honor of his wife, Carol.
