Joanne H. Woods

Joanne Haddock (Williams) Woods, age 90, a resident of Beacon Hill at Eastgate, Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017 at Butterworth Hospital. Jo was born in 1927 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the daughter of William David and Gwen Haddock Williams. A 1945 graduate of Morgantown High School, she then attended West Virginia University with a degree in Physical Education.  A year of teaching was followed with the first of several overseas trips. She continued her career as a YWCA and Salvation Army social worker for the next 40 years. Her work took her to Cincinnati and then to Grand Rapids; her travels took her to Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Joanne was preceded in death by her wonderful older brother, David. She is survived by her nephew, David (Beth) and their daughter, Joanne; nephew, Tim (Debbie) and their children, Nick and Haley; nephew, Danny (Dianne) and their children, Brandon (Abbie) and Brittanny; niece, Tappan (Duwane) Squires and their children, Katie and Will (Brittany), Tim and Sammy all of Buckhannon, West Virginia; niece, Renee (Steve) Gucciardo and their sons, Anthony, Andy and Alex of Detroit, MI. Jo was a member of East Congregational  United Church of Christ for over 40 years. Along with her church and charity support she was an active swimmer, golfer, walker and all-around mover. Butter pecan ice cream was her favorite. A celebration of her life will be held 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 25th at East Congregational UCC, 1005 Giddings Ave S.E., where her family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00. Joanne’s ashes will be scattered in the hills of West Virginia, where she will always be a Mountaineer.  Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to the East Congregational UCC, the YWCA or the Salvation Army.
