Welcome to the memorial page for

Margaret Elizabeth "Midge" Mason

May 9, 1927 ~ January 13, 2017 (age 89) 89 Years Old

Beloved mother and grandmother, Midge Mason, died peacefully with her children by her side on Friday, January 13, 2017. She was 89 years old.

Arrangements are in the care of Metcalf  & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Rd SE, Grand Rapids. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has occurred.

Midge was born May 9, 1927 in Lake Leelanau, MI to Ed and Marion Geary Luczek. With sisters Florence and Gladys, and brother Donald, Midge attended St. Mary’s High School.  After graduation in 1944, she joined the Air Force as a nurse and moved to Grand Rapids to enroll in the nursing program at St. Mary’s Hospital where she earned her RN degree.

In 1948, she met Gerald “Jerry” Mason at a friend’s wedding, and they married three months later.  Jerry and Midge raised five children in Rockford, MI.  While Jerry developed the skills of a successful entrepreneur, Midge devoted herself happily to her roles of wife and mother, and the Mason family home served as a gathering place for friends and a hub for adventure.

Even after Jerry’s death in 1991, Midge enjoyed raising and racing horses, going on special adventure trips with her good friend, Bobbi, and summering in Pentwater.  The Pentwater cottage was a retreat for the entire Mason family, and Midge loved spending time there with her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She said it “warmed her heart” to see her children together smiling.  Often, amid the noise of family and the crowds in the kitchen, she would slip off to watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.

Midge is survived by her sister Florence; daughters’ Deborah Quillan and Linda Mason; sons’ G. Donald Mason and Peter Mason; grandchildren Ryan (LeAnna), Aaron, Brandon (Tawny), Brittney, Parker, Brier, Ansley, Jackson and Cohen; and great-grandchildren Sebastian, Gabriel and Sophia. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald; her parents; her son Jack; her husband Gerald; her sister Gladys; and her step-grandson Daniel.

A celebration of Midge’s life will be held at 6:30pm on January 21, 2017 at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park.   Family and friends are invited to share memories at http://www.metcalfandjonkhoff.com, and in lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to Emmanuel Hospice (www.emmanuaelhospice.org) 2161 Leonard St. NW Grand Rapids, MI 49504.
