Virginia W. Hewitt

Virginia Wyatt Hewitt, age 102, died peacefully in East Grand Rapids on November 23, 2017. For half of her long life she was married to Alfred (Ted) Hewitt (1915-1994) with whom she raised four children, three of whom survive: James R. Hewitt (Louise) of Okemos, Stephen W. Hewitt of Portland, Oregon, and Roger F. Hewitt (Patti) of Ann Arbor.  Her daughter, Nancy Homrich, preceded her in death as did her two brothers, John Wyatt and Robert Wyatt. Also surviving are four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.  An active resident of Porter Hills Village for over 20 years, Ginny, as she was known to her friends, outlived most of them but her capacity for forming new friendships held her in good stead.  Born in Chicago in 1915, she lived most of her life in Grand Rapids. She attended Ottawa Hills High School and in 1937 received a B.S. degree from the University of Michigan. Before her marriage she taught school in Petoskey and at South High School in Grand Rapids. She was active in her community, providing support and leadership for the Mary Free Bed Guild, the Junior League, the Women’s City Club, and the Junior Board of Blodgett Hospital. A long-time member of Fountain Street Church, she continued to enjoy recorded services presented at Porter Hills.  Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6th at the Meeting House in Porter Hills Village, 3604 E.
