James Upjohn Collins, M.D. age 78, passed away at his home in Grand Rapids on February 3, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents Marshall E. and Ruth S. Collins and his brother Grant M. Collins. He is survived by his siblings, Ward E. Collins II, Judith C. (Charles) Cantin, Ellen N. Collins, Mark L. Collins and Martha C. (George) Yeatman, two nieces, a nephew and seven grand nieces and nephews.
Jim was a sparkling graduate of the University of Michigan and Wayne State University School of Medicine. Jim then became a Lt. Cmdr. in the Navy, serving as a doctor and Chief of ICU for the Marines in Vietnam. After being honorably discharged, he practiced as an anesthesiologist at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids until his early retirement. His favorite pastime was watching old classic movies. Jim was always a gentleman in so many ways. He was kind, caring, and generous, helping out so many of his friends and family. He is already missed by many!
Funeral services for Jim will be held 11am on Monday at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The family will greet friends Sunday from 2 to 4pm at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Mt.
