John Daniel Wessely

John D. Wessely age 75, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on May 12.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jean; parents Joseph and Kathryn Wessely; siblings, Joan (Joni) Kowalczyk, Timothy Wessely; niece, Katie Rose Wessely; his in-laws, Clarence and Regina Bowen, Carl Hentschel, and Duane Huver.  John is survived by his siblings, Margo Huver, Carol Hentschel, Mark (Gloria) Wessely; in-laws, Al Kowalczyk, Joseph (Gloria) Bowen, Judy Bowen, Kathleen Bowen, and many nieces, nephews and best friend, Jim Whalen.

John graduated from Catholic Central High School and attended Aquinas prior to enlisting into the United States Marines. Johns MOS was an Electrical Systems Tech assigned to the HMM-163 Ridge Runners and did two tours of duty in Vietnam. He returned home, met Mary Jean Bowen. The two wed and were married for 37 years before her passing. After the service John worked many years for the City of Grand Rapids in Parking Services before retiring. John is a life member of Knights of Columbus Council 8291, Monsignor Moleski Council, as well as a 4th Degree Life Member.  

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 17th, 10am at SS. Peter & Paul Parish, 520 Myrtle St NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504 with Rev. Msgr. Louis Stasker as celebrant. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home with a Rosary service at 7pm, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday from 10 to 11am.
