June B. Hamersma

June Ruth (Bos) Hamersma of Grand Rapids died Sunday, February 16, 2020 surrounded by her family.  June is survived by John, her husband of 62 years, and her children Dr. John and Glenes Hamersma (Tatiana and Anna) and Mary and Kenneth Baas (Daniel and Elizabeth).  Also survived by her brother, Lawrence D. Bos, Sr. and her sister in law Henrietta Hamersma.  June was born in Grand Rapids and graduated from Calvin College.  She served as Program Director at WFUR before marrying John in 1957 and moved to New York City where she served as Director of Publications and Publicity for The Riverside Church. After their return to Grand Rapids June devoted herself to raising her children. She volunteered extensively in the community notably in the Susan Lowe Guild of Butterworth Hospital and became chair of the Education Committee for the Michigan Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. She was founding member of the Hospice of Michigan Foundation Board and founded the January Series of Calvin College.  Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 20 at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road SE . The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Friday, February 21 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Parish, 156 Valley Ave SW.  If you wish to honor June’s memory contributions may be made to one of the charities important to June including Hospice of Michigan Foundation and Sacred Heart of Jesus Academy.
