Margaret Simon Obituary

Margaret Simon, aged 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday, June 11, 2021 after an extended illness.  A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Margaret graduated from Central High School and enrolled in vocational training afterwards.  Accepting a position with Blackmer Pump, Margaret went on to become a cornerstone of the organization for over 55 years.  She was the Executive Engineering Administrative Assistant to numerous Engineering Vice Presidents over the term of her employment.  When she started in Blackmer’s Engineering Department, engineers did their calculations on slide rules.  When she retired, complete designs were done on CAD software.  Margaret promoted new technology and was quick to transition to computerized word processors and assisted others through the changes.  The people that knew and worked with Margaret over the years loved her dearly and appreciated her willingness to help others.  It was a bittersweet day when Margaret retired and she was missed in the daily interaction of the organization.  Margaret left a legacy of congeniality, professionalism and caring for fellow workers.  As a lifelong member, St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church is where Margaret lived her deeply held Christian faith:  Not only did she enjoy singing in the church choir, but she was an unofficial and friendly ambassador to all newcomers.  Margaret was a decades long member of the St. George Ladies Golden Links Society, now known as St. George Antiochian Women.  She served as President and in other officer positions.  Always involved, Margaret  was often found working on ticket sales and was counted upon for the successful fund raising.  Active also at the Diocese level, Margaret served Midwest Antiochian Women in the role of Vice President and in various coordinator positions.    In recognition of her exemplary service, Margaret received the Metropolitan Philip Award in 2003.  Margaret is survived by her brothers Matthew Simon and Fr. Daniel (Eileen) Simon and sister, Frances (Jim) Sears.  She is preceded in death by her brother George Simon and sister-in-law Kareemeh Simon.  Margaret leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and Godchildren.

The family will receive visitors at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 334 La Grave Ave, Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Monday, June 14, 2021, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m and also between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.   A Trisagion service will be held at 7:00 p.m.  On Tuesday, June 15, 2021, visitation will be held again at St. George, between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service commencing at 11:00 a.m.
