Alice J. Porter

After a long and full life, Alice Porter Landis died peacefully in her home on December 17, 2019.

Alice was pre-deceased by her parents, John and Anna Osadchuk, her husband Charles F. Porter, her son Charles T. Porter and her husband Martin S. Landis.

She is survived by her children; Martha Porter, Peggy Porter, David Porter, grandchildren Maggie and Anna Porter, stepdaughter Emily Dennis and her sons Jacob and Aaron as well as many special friends.

Before her retirement, Alice was a teacher for the Grand Rapids Public Schools. Earlier in her career she served as the Executive Secretary of the Central Volunteer Service of the United Way. 

Alice was born in and lived all her life in Grand Rapids, graduating from Union High School and Western Michigan University. She was active in serving her community and church. She was a past board member of the Urban League, a member of the MR Bissell Guild of Blodgett Hospital and Opera Affiliates.  She was a 50 years plus member of the Women’s City Club and Cascade Country Club.  A longtime member of Grace Episcopal Church, she was the first woman granted license by Bishop Bennison as a lay reader.  She was also the first woman elected as a vestry member of Grace and served several times as Senior Warden in addition to chairing a capital campaign and multiple stewardship drives. 

A memorial service will be held at 11am January 3 at Grace Episcopal Church, 1815 Hall St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI with the Rev. Stephen Holmgren officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service and a light luncheon will follow.  

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant Village of the Great Lakes Benevolent Fund or to the Grace Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, supporting the church that she loved and served for over 60 years.
