David Hollinger Clare Sr., age 77, of Grand Rapids, passed away suddenly on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at his home. David was born in Grand Rapids on July 7, 1941, the son of Kenneth and Joy Clare, He graduated from Grand Rapids Central High School, Class of 1959. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for four years as a Machinist aboard the USS F.D. Roosevelt. He transitioned to the Naval Reserves and retired in1984 at rank of Lt. Commander. David graduated from the University of Georgia in 1967 with a degree in Education. He taught school in several vocational centers, and at West Catholic High School in Grand Rapids, MI. He enjoyed golf, both playing and watching. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Barbara Clare; his three children, son, David Clare Jr. (Marc), daughter, Susan Clare (Carmen), and daughter, Amy Anderson (Brian); three grandchildren (Joseph, Brennan, and Austin); one brother, Kenneth C. Clare (Helen) and two nephews (Thane and Teague). Funeral services will be held 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 3:30 until the 5:30 service time. Military Honors will be provided by the Kent County Honor Guard. For those who wish, memorials may be made to Wounded Warriors.
