Josephine went to join her beloved husband Harry in Heaven on July 18. Born Josephine Johnson in Sparta, she graduated from Sparta High School, Grand Rapids Junior College, and the University of Michigan, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Josephine and Harry married on April 30, 1943. They remained devoted to each other until his death in 2008. They donated land for the creation of Luton Park near Rockford, which they saw as an enduring legacy to their lifelong love of nature.
Josephine was preceded in death by Harry, daughter Jane, and infant son David. She is survived by son Harry Jr. (Barbara), son John, and son Robert (Janice), 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren. For many years Josephine was active in the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Women’s City Club and in women’s groups at Fountain Street Church. In 1966, as a volunteer at the Grand Rapids Museum, she typed “The Story of Grand Rapids” by Z.Z. Lydens (editor). All 682 pages. On a manual typewriter.
We love you,
Harry, Barbara, John, Bob, Janice
