Margaret L. (Gill) Jack of Grand Rapids died July 23, 2018, just eight days before her 99th birthday. Margaret “Margie” was born in Lake Odessa, MI on July 31, 1919, to Howard Lawrence and Clare (Luther) Lawrence. Margie was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed. Margie lived an active and full life, and her family was the most important part of that life. She graduated from Albion College in 1941, and later earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan. In August of 1941, she married Gaylord C. Gill Jr., who died in 1979. In August of 1985, Margie married Thomas J. Jack, and they shared 17 wonderful years together before Tom’s death in 2002. Margie was an elementary school teacher in East Grand Rapids for over 20 years, and most of those years were at Woodcliff School. Her former students knew her as Mrs. Gill. She also volunteered many hours through the Junior League of Grand Rapids and the Junior Mary Free Bed Guild. Margie was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and five brothers: Luther, Howard, Jr., Paul, Gordon and Walter. She will be lovingly remembered by her children and step-children: Gaylord (Susan) Gill III, of Highland, MI; Betsy (David) Spalding of Wilmette, IL; Larry (Suzy) Gill of Grand Rapids, MI; Janie (Ray) McMillen of South Lyon, MI; Nancy (Phil) Ryan of St. Joseph, MI; Tom (Sandra) Jack, Jr. of Greenville, RI; and Robert Jack of Holland, MI. Margie will also be missed by her 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday September 7, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. with visitation beginning at 9 am. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Albion College, The Grand Rapids Community Foundation, or to a charity of one’s choice.
