Mary Carolyn Matteson, aged 81, of Grand Rapids, passed away on January 7, 2020. She is survived by her son, Thorne (Breck) Matteson; grandchildren, Quinn Matteson, Grey Matteson, TJ Matteson; brothers, Robert F. (Felina) Brown, T. James (Stella) Brown; sister-in-law, Mary Brown; brother-in-law, Dr. J. Clyde (Marcia) Spencer; nieces, Laura (Dan) Dougherty, Lisa Lyman, Allison Duniven, Debbie Donnellon, Bridget (Aaron) Thiel, Kristen (Jay) Haselschwerdt, Aldene Brown; nephews, Craig (Gina) Spencer, Bryce (Margo) Spencer, Todd (Debbie) Spencer, Rick T. (Sue) Brown II, Gerald Brown; many great-nieces and nephews. Mary Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Matteson; her parents, Thorne and Florence Brown; her sister, Beverly Spencer; and her brother, R.T. Brown.
Mary Carolyn was born on October 22, 1938 and graduated Ottawa Hills High School and Michigan State University (although she was a lifelong fan of the University of Michigan). She was a teacher at Jefferson Elementary School and later a teacher and director at The Children's Workshop. She was a lifelong member of East Congregational Church. She loved family, children, dogs, football, and Lake Michigan.
A private memorial service will be held for the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gilda's Club Grand Rapids, Humane Society of West Michigan, or East Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
