Roy Alexander Sturgeon, age 85, of Grand Rapids passed away on July 18 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. His loving bride of 55 years, Marguerite, was by his side. Roy was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, where he spent his early years. As a young adult, Roy immigrated to the United States and served in the Navy at the end of the Korean War. He settled in West Michigan where he met and married his beloved wife, Marguerite, and raised his family. Roy had a long and successful career as a regional controller at Consumers Energy, from which he retired in 1987. Roy’s love for the Lord was evident to all who knew him. He served as a Sunday School teacher at Calvary Baptist Church for over 30 years. Roy also served on various boards and volunteer ministries, including American Red Cross, International Aid, Michigan Christian Home, Northpointe Christian School, Optimist Club of Grand Rapids, and Gideons International. Roy spent many of his retirement years corresponding with prisoners that enrolled in Bible study courses through New Creations Ministries. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Susan Sturgeon; sister, Vicki (Jack); brothers Jim (Muriel), Samuel (Joyce), Derek (Rachel), and Percy. He is survived by his beloved wife, Marguerite; brother, Alan (Pat); sons, Thomas (Shelly), and Timothy (Kimberly); grandchildren, Joshua (Becki), Drew, Zac, Caleb, Evan, Clay, Kujtim, and great-granddaughter, Molly. Visitation will be Thursday, July 20, from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids. The funeral service will be on Friday, July 21, at 11am at Calvary Church, 707 East Beltline Ave. A lunch reception will follow the service.
