Charles Mark Stoppels, age 78, of Grand Rapids passed away on January 30, 2026.
Mark was born in Petoskey, Michigan the son of Rev. Charles and Iris (Muyskens) Stoppels. He graduated from Flint Central High School, the University of Michigan Flint, and the University of Michigan Law School. He moved to Grand Rapids in 1973 and worked as an attorney for 50 years.
Mark was very active in his community. He sang in the choir at St. Mark’s Episcopal church for 45 years, served on the Vestry for three terms, and taught the high school Sunday School class for several years. He sang in the Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus and was a past member of the Peninsular Club and the Rotary Club of Grand Rapids.
Mark loved the Michigan lakeshore. He especially enjoyed spending time in Omena on the Leelanau Peninsula and was instrumental in securing the historic designation for the Omena Presbyterian Church.
He was a devoted husband and father. On May 15, 1971 he married Martha Sue (Warren) Stoppels who survives. Also surviving are his daughter Kelley (Shawn Hughes) and his son Andrew (Darren Pierson); two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Henry Stoppels-Hughes; his sisters, Laura Chamberlain, Jeanne Stoppels (John Carroll), and Alice Ray; and his aunt, June Stoppels, several cousins, nieces, and a nephew.
The family will receive friends at the Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 7, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids, with the Rev. Jedediah Fox officiating. A private interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Holland.
