Carol Rae Beernink, age 78, of Grand Rapids, MI, passed away at home on Thursday morning, May 23, 2024. Born on July 16, 1945, in Grand Rapids, she was the daughter of James and Catherine (Wiersma) Buffinga. Carol was a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School where she was a cheerleader and went on to become a nurse in healthcare through Blodgett Nursing School. She was active in the Kent County Medical Society Auxiliary and throughout the years she was also very active with Goodwill and organizing many fashion shows. In many ways, Carol defined the meaning of a servant’s heart. She loved nothing more than being there for others, serving, giving, volunteering, and helping. She could light up a room with her exuberant smile and uncanny ways, yet her wonderful words of wisdom, advice and compassion were always welcome in a time of need. A friend of many and a stranger to few, Carol was a pillar of strength not only for her family, but to those with whom she touched throughout her life. Foremost was her family which she loved and adored. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, John Beernink; children, Kristin Beernink and Lisa (John) Pacillo; grandchildren, Emma Soda and Aidan Soda; step-grandson, Skyler Pacillo; her brother, Bob (Bev) Buffinga; sister, Marilyn Buffinga; extended family and friends. A time for friends and family to gather to celebrate Carol’s life will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024, from 4-7 PM at the Metcalf & Jonkoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546. Private family services will be held with burial in Lake Forest Cemetery – Grand Haven, MI. For those who wish, memorial contributions in Carol’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
