Charles Hodgkinson Obituary

Charles P. Hodgkinson II, M.D., age 91, of Grand Rapids, MI passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA and was the son of the late Charles P. and Amy V. (Walker) Hodgkinson. Following high school, Charles furthered his education at Albion College. In Cadillac, MI, on June 12, 1955, he married the love of his life, Carole Ann Munson of Cadillac.  Charles attended Wayne State University Medical School in Detroit. He interned at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids from 1957-1958 and then went on to further his education at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where he completed his fellowship in Ophthalmology in 1962. He went on to serve his country with the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corp. He was honorably discharged as Lieutenant Commander.  He began his own practice of Ophthalmologic Surgery in Grand Rapids and Grandville from 1964 until his retirement in 2002.  Chuck dearly loved his family time and enjoyed special times making memories with his family in the Upper Peninsula.  He cherished many special times with his good friends at the Watershed Club in Grayling.  His sense of humor was shared freely with family and friends.  Chuck also loved fly fishing and, with his dogs, bird hunting.  He had a keen interest in automobiles and knew his way in the investment world. In summary Chuck was a kind and humble man.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Carole; their children: Joseph Hodgkinson of New Orleans, LA, Kimberly (Thomas Branch) Hodgkinson of Cascade Township, MI, and Diane (David) Shuart of Novi, MI; grandchildren, all of whom loved him very much, Jessica Hodgkinson, Paul Hodgkinson, Ashley Hodgkinson Cribb, Natalie (Zach) Rogers, Caroline (Michael) Aaberg, and Benjamin Shuart; great-grandchildren, Soliel Hodgkinson Cribb and Evelyn Rogers. In accordance with Chucks’ wishes, cremation has taken place and he will be laid to rest at their family vacation home in AuTrain, MI which he and Carole loved. For a lasting memorial, a contribution to Emmanuel Hospice, 401 Hall St. SW #263, Grand Rapids, Michigan is suggested in his memory. Charles P.
