Charlotte Chandler Obituary

Born in Hart, Charlotte Chandler was the daughter of I.J. and Edith Chandler. Charlotte was just five years old when her mother died in 1927, while her father passed away in 1976. Mr. Chandler, his mother and his sister lived with Charlotte during her childhood, and she spent holidays and summers with her maternal aunt and uncle on their Oceana County fruit farm.

Charlotte’s 101 years were spent in many active pursuits. She was a band member at Hart High School before graduating in 1940. Charlotte also attended Hart Congregational Church, joined its youth group and traveled to three state-wide youth conferences.

Charlotte continued her formal education at Davenport Business College in Grand Rapids, and made the city her home thereafter. Charlotte made her way in professional accounting with Beatrice Foods, Grand Rapids Medical Arts Supply, and Bignall Dental Supply Company.

When Charlotte was not behind her desk at work, she was a loyal member of Park Church where she became a member of Alice Coulter Ten and Helen Powell Ten, after joining the church in 1946. Charlotte loved all of her companion dogs including Lucky, Tippy, Sandy and especially Pupper, and she faithfully exercised them with daily walks in her Baldwin Avenue S.E. neighborhood. Charlotte loved the out-of-doors and, in particular, used the Grand Rapids Audubon Club, Blandford Nature Center and North Country Trail Association as vehicles for experiencing nature firsthand. She was a dutiful gardener and annually blessed family and friends with 12 jars of jams and jellies.

During Charlotte’s retirement years, she demonstrated her commitment to the aforementioned organizations that had contributed so much to her recreational and spiritual life by volunteering to support the functioning of each. Once Charlotte moved from her home to Fulton Manor Retirement Home she remained active and continued to volunteer her time.

Charlotte is survived by her cousins Kathy (Craig) and Tegan Broome, Jim (Anne) Wunsch and Lydia (David) and Otto VanWormer. There will be a family graveside gathering in the fall.

Charlotte’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the many kind caregivers at Fulton Manor, Raybrook Manor and Faith Hospice.
