Cheryl J. Sales D.O.

Cheryl J. Sales, age 85, of Grand Rapids, MI passed away at home on Saturday, September 14, 2024. Born in Los Angeles, CA on October 23, 1938, she was the only child of the late Morris and Erla (Imbrie) John. Talented and driven from her earliest years, Cheryl accomplished much throughout her life. She attended the local schools and studied figure skating and trained as a concert pianist. Following high school, she went on to attend the University of Southern California where she received her teaching degree and met her future husband. Cheryl began her teaching career and soon married her college sweetheart. Dedicated and devoted, she traveled from base to base when he was drafted into the military, and they soon welcomed the births of two sons, Marcel and Erik. When her husband took a position as the official flight surgeon for the U.S. space program, the couple relocated to Houston, TX. Embarking on yet another career, Cheryl attended medical school in Kansas and eventually the family made their way to Grand Rapids, MI. For over 30 years she served the greater Grand Rapids area in her practice as an Orthopedic Surgeon and held the honor of being the first female board certified DO in the nation. She literally threw herself into her work and family, the two most important aspects of her life, in addition to visiting Solid Rock Worship Center. Anytime she spent with her beloved children and grandchildren, it always brought a welcome smile to Cheryl’s face. She was always encouraging, loving and a wonderful role model to those who loved her and held her most dear. She is survived by her sons, Marcel (Maria) Sales and Erik Sales; grandchildren, Sophie, Ruby, Jasmine and Manuel. The funeral service celebrating Cheryl’s life will be held Saturday, September 21, 2024, 11:00 AM at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546 where friends may meet with the family one hour prior to the service.
