Claude Robinson Obituary

Claude G. Robinson, age 98, passed away on Thursday January 4, 2024 . Claude was born on July 13, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Claude and Gladys Robinson.  He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces, Deborah (Steven) and Christine (Phil); nephew, Harold (Molly); great-nephews Jason, Brett (Lisa), Kyle (Aubree), Drew, Jake (Alicia), David (Megan), and Michael (Jennifer); great-nieces Audrey (Bill) and Hannah (Kevin); great-great nephews Luke, Grant, Reid, and William; and great-great nieces Isla and Sienna.

Claude was preceded in death by Marion, his wife of 65 years, who passed away in 2013, brother Wayne (Barbara); brother-in-law Harold (Virginia); sisters-in-law Virginia (Harold) and Barbara (Wayne); nephew, Bruce; and niece, Laura.

A native of Detroit, Claude received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Wayne State University. A registered professional engineer, he held engineering and management positions with companies in Detroit and Milwaukee before joining American Seating in Grand Rapids in 1969. Claude retired from American Seating as President of the Transportation Products Group.

In 1943 Claude entered the US Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. He was one of a few officers in the Air Force with a triple rating (navigator, bombardier and radar observation). Claude was discharged from the Air Force in 1945 and elected to remain in the USAF as a reserve officer. In 1951 Claude’s unit was called to active duty. During processing, it was discovered he was a bridge engineer working on the John C. Lodge Freeway, including the bridge under Cobo Hall, and therefore did not go into active duty.

After retiring, Claude committed his time to civic endeavors. Claude became an active member of the Cascade Township Planning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals where he continued to use his expertise and vision to enhance the quality of life of his surrounding community. Due to Claude’s dedication and generosity, the Cascade community now has a universally accessible children’s park. The Marion and Claude Robinson Children’s Playground is located in the Cascade Township Recreation Park. Claude has also brought joy to children and adults alike by making possible a large fish aquarium which is located inside the Cascade Township Library.

Family and friends will gather to celebrate Claude’s life on Friday, January 26 at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m. A memorial service with military honors will follow at 11 a.m.
