Gus served in the US Army 1968 to 1970 where he was stationed in the DMZ in South Korea. There he was exposed to Agent Orange which contributed to his declining health. Gus was proud to serve his country and continued to serve in the National Guard.
Gus was of Greek heritage and grew up speaking Greek. He was baptized in Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. He was the son of the late George and Helen “Nitsa” Katosris. That heritage formed his identity and became an essential part of who he was.
He is survived by his son, Brett Bucholtz, daughter, Luanne (Bruce) Bytwerk, sister Kathy (Richard) Bishop, grandchildren, Noah, Nick, Jordan, Alexis, along with loving family and close friends.
When Gus’s father came to Grand Rapids from Greece he learned the trade of shoe repairman and operated the George Katsoris Shoe Repair in Eastown Village. Eventually Gus stepped in to help his father and learned the trade. Gus was topnotch like his father and both had become respected businessmen in the Eastown district. Gus was very mechanically inclined and gifted in repairing and restoring your favorite pair of shoes.
After his father’s passing, the family can honestly say Gus devoted himself to caring for his mother until she passed away in 2010.
Gus was proud of his beautifully decorated condo. His favorite hobby and conversation was cars, especially his Mustang which he periodically showed.
