Cyrus McNinch Obituary

Cyrus Evans McNinch, 97, born December 21, 1926 in Port Huron, Michigan, to Viola and Elwyn McNinch, died peacefully on February 18, 2024 in Grand Rapids, Michigan after a long illness with dementia.

After graduating from Port Huron High School, Cy attended the University of Michigan for one semester before enlisting in the US Navy when he turned 18. He served as a Pharmacist Mate Medic during World War II. He briefly attended Michigan State University after discharge from the Navy. He then completed an apprenticeship as an electrician and worked for Grand Trunk Railroad for 10 years in Port Huron. In 1957 he replied to an advertisement in the Popular Electronics Magazine for a young company called IBM (International Business Machines) and was hired into the then new field of computer technology. Cy started as a Maintenance Engineer working on very large corporate computers that occupied entire rooms of a building. He worked for IBM for 30 years until retiring in 1987 as a Senior Systems Engineer. At that time, he was working with leading-edge technology teams to develop and market a novel concept for powerful small computers that would fit on a desk or be a “personal computer”. Over the course of his career with IBM, he worked and lived in New York, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and North Carolina. After retiring Cy lived at Canadian Lakes and Grand Rapids, Michigan, then Virginia Beach before returning to Grand Rapids to be near family in 2019.

Cy met his first wife, Verna Belle Hall, on a blind date at a church youth group event in Port Huron. They were happily married for 36 years, raised 3 children and attended Methodist Churches. Verna preceded him in death in 1986. Cy met his second wife, Geraldine Alice Dodds, while on an Elderhostel trip in Costa Rica and they were married 29 years. Together they enjoyed many adventure-trips around the world while residing in Grand Rapids and then at Westminster Canterbury Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Cy was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Jane McNinch, step-father Clare Evans and step-daughter Karen Dodds. Cy will be lovingly remembered by his wife Gerry; his 3 children, Dale (Martha) McNinch of Grand Rapids, Shirley (Bob) Cunningham of Fort Myers, and Thomas (Sandi) McNinch of Duck, NC; 5 grandchildren, Dianne (Scott) Bowman, Michael (Katie) McNinch, Marianne (Dan) Janson, Christine (Tim) Cocrane, Whitney (Rick) Kelso, and Lea McNinch; 12 great-grandchildren, Lauren (Forest) Rulison, Megan Bowman, Ashley Bowman, Michael McNinch, William Banks McNinch, Patrick Janson, George Janson, Wesley Janson, James Janson, Cora Janson, Annie Cocrane and Ellie Cocrane; Step-children Carol Small, John Dyer, Kelsey Dodds Seefeldt, and Paul (Danica) Seefeldt; step-grandchildren Drew, Lake and Sarah Seefeldt.

Cy was a believer in Christ. He had an adventurous spirit and he loved to learn. He built his own experimental aircraft, a “Benson Gyro-Copter” and enjoyed flying it for several years. He loved riding his motorcycle, doing puzzles, playing games, exploring the outdoors and he had a passion for genealogy. He creatively polished stones for making jewelry and designed a beautiful stained-glass window. Highly intelligent, he could figure out and fix anything! He was contented, courteous, appreciative, loving and kind to ALL who interacted with him, often using humorous rhymes and sweet greetings in his conversations. He was a wonderful, loving husband, devoted dad and grandfather who cherished his family.

The loving and attentive care provided by Emmanuel Hospice and Provision Living at Forest Hills is very much appreciated.
