Dean Haney Obituary

Dean Orval Haney was born August 26, 1947 in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada and died May 14, 2024 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His parents, Neil G. and Theodora E. A. Haney, eagerly brought their son home to Marysville, Michigan. Dean graduated from Marysville High School after participating in many school and community activities. He earned Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees from Michigan State University and taught at Grand Blanc Community Schools in Grand Blanc, Michigan for 32 years.

He married Nancy Shook on June 14, 1975 and they lived in Flint, Grand Blanc, and Fenton before retiring to Grand Rapids, Michigan.  Dean loved his family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, middle school students, and volunteering for school and community activities. Dean was a life-long learner and enjoyed reading and traveling. Upon moving to Grand Rapids he delved into learning about his new community by volunteering for the Gerald R. Ford Museum and Experience Grand Rapids. He served as a Gerald R. Ford International Airport Ambassador for many years. He also played golf and was fortunate to have four hole-in-one scores. Dean and Nancy were seasonal residents of Sanibel Island and Sarasota, Florida after Dean retired in 2002.

Dean is survived by his wife; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws: Jacqueline and Philip Babcock, Sharon Shook, Brian and Ruth Shook, Jill and Doug Wilson; nephews and nieces, Aunt (Ruth Hicks), and cousins.  He is predeceased by his parents; father-in-law (Jay L. Shook) and mother-in-law (Edna Eileen Shook) and several  aunts, uncles, and cousins.
