Charles Robert Henry, MD met his Lord and Savior April 26, 2026. Born to Charles Howard Henry and Gladys Marie Henry (ne’ Ankenney), in Oskaloosa, IA, July 17, 1941, Chuck began a productive and meaningful life, devoted to all he touched. His family moved to Kalamazoo, MI when he was a young boy where he quickly gained many lifelong friends. Chuck organized sock hops during lunch hours, playing his trombone, in the University High School gymnasium, where his classmates danced to tunes of the 1950’s. He developed his moral character through his participation in The Boy Scouts of America and became a proud Eagle Scout. Chuck was elected president of his high school class as everyone piled on the “Chuckwagon” and earned scholarships to The University of Michigan where he was accepted into The University of Michigan marching band and honors college. There, he was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity and participated in the men’s Glee Club. After establishing an outstanding academic record, Chuck matriculated into medical school after just three years, and graduated from The University of Michigan medical school in 1966. Chuck was accepted into the Otolaryngology residency at the University of California San Francisco. He served his intern year at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, then served in the United States Coastguard for 2 years as a Lieutenant Commander, during which time he married the love of his life, Margaret, in 1967. By completion of residency in ear, nose, and throat, head and neck surgery in 1973, he and Margaret had welcomed two children, Elizabeth and Charlie. The young family moved cross country back to Michigan, and established lifelong roots in Grand Rapids. Their third child, Alison, was born in Grand Rapids. Chuck’s commitment to service continued not only in his conscientious care of his patients but also in his charitable leadership in his band, The Docs of Dixieland, playing his trombone. He and his fellow colleagues had a fabulous time jamming to upbeat Dixieland tunes, playing for various nursing homes and causes, while contributing thousands of dollars annually to various charitable organizations. He served as President and Trustee of the Kent County Medical Society from 1991-1994. He also served as a mentor for medical students and young surgeons as an Associate Professor of Michigan State University. His contagious personality and talent as a musician led him to become a member of the Bohemian Club. He was a proud member for 43 years and became part of the “Old Guard”. Through “The Club” he met many fascinating men who were successful, talented, and creative in many different skill sets. He enjoyed “The Grove” and the peace amidst the redwoods, immersing himself in stimulating conversation, social enrichment, and enlightening himself in the art, music, and theatrical talent.
Chuck was fun, always on the go, interested in everything, and game to embrace all life had to offer, from boating and fishing on Lake Michigan, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, traveling and watching sunsets. He was a devoted husband, father, and friend.
Chuck is preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Alison Henry. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Margaret, his children, Elizabeth Henry (Bruno Unzens) and Charlie Henry (Heidi), and three outstanding grandchildren, Charles and Elena Henry, and Alexandra Unzens. He will be missed beyond words. He was deeply loved by many.
Memorial services will be held Saturday May 16, 11am, at Mayflower Congregational Church with reception to follow in the church atrium. If one wishes to make a charitable donation in his honor, we feel the Special Olympics would be appropriate, in memory of his beloved special needs daughter, Alison.
