Dr. Jens W Goebel

Dr. Jens Goebel, a renowned pediatric nephrologist whose compassion and brilliance changed the lives of countless children, passed away surrounded by love. Born in Hanover, Germany, on August 19, 1961, to Gerhard and Christa Göbel, Jens carried an unshakable joy for life—from his treasured days on the soccer field to his devotion to his patients, and to his final moments of grace, continuing the gift of life through organ donation.

A graduate of Heidelberg University Medical School, Jens discovered his calling while working in a research lab that ignited his lifelong devotion to helping children with kidney disease. After earning his medical degree, he moved to the United States, where he built a remarkable career and a beautiful family. His work took him to Alabama, Kentucky, Ohio, Colorado, and Michigan, and everywhere he went, he became not only a leader in pediatric nephrology and transplantation but also a mentor, teacher, and dear friend.

To know Jens was to feel uplifted by his unwavering optimism. No matter the situation, he was always feeling “Totally Awesome.” His boundless enthusiasm, gentle humor, and genuine care left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

On March 26, 2011, Jens married the love of his life, Denise Goebel, and together they shared a love story that inspired everyone around them. He is also survived by his beloved children, Katie Goebel of Ames, Iowa, and Alex Goebel of Floyds Knobs, Indiana, along with countless friends, family, colleagues, and former patients who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and excellence.

Visitation will be held at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Thursday, October 30, from 2:00–4:00p.m. and 6:00–8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will take place 11:30am November 15th at Christ Church Cathedral, 318 E. 4th St., Cincinnati, OH 45202, officiated by The Reverend Bill Scrivener, with interment at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Through this work, his spirit of hope and healing will continue to touch generations to come.
