Elizabeth Kiel Obituary

Elizabeth (Libby) Kiel, age 79, of Grand Rapids, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2020. Libby was a woman of strong faith, with a gentle and beautiful soul, and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Antoinette and Anthony Bandrofcheck, and her siblings, Vickie and Joe. Libby is survived by her beloved husband of 56 years, Richard (Rich); her daughters, Melanie, Kathleen (Tobin) Anderson, Jennifer (Mike) Nagelkerke; her grandchildren, Parker and Claire (Kathleen and Tobin), Anna and Kate (Jennifer and Mike); her sister, Barbara (Dennis) Coppula; and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Libby was born in 1941 and grew up in Scottdale, Pennsylvania. She earned her RN degree at Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA in 1961. Libby and Rich met in 1962 and married in 1964. They moved from Pennsylvania to New Jersey in 1974 and to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1979 where they raised their children and have been long-time members of St. Robert of Newminster Church. Libby spent countless hours actively serving her parish and its ministries while also volunteering her time to the Blodgett Hospital Guild and Kent County District Library for many years. In addition, Libby worked for decades as a compassionate nurse, touching many lives. An avid reader, Libby enjoyed participating in multiple book clubs throughout the years, developing many strong friendships as a result. Libby also delighted in visits with her grandchildren, enjoyed gardening, socializing with close friends, and spending time in Florida with Rich during the winter months. She also thoroughly enjoyed watching both Michigan and Michigan State football and basketball games with great enthusiasm. Through the years, many wonderful memories have been made and will be forever cherished.

A private family service was held on April 29, 2020, and a memorial mass will be held at a later date. In memory of Libby and in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center. Libby’s family welcomes memories and messages on the tribute wall in their guestbook online.
