Ellen Wood Obituary

Ellen Raczynski Wood, age 83 of Rockford, Michigan, went to be with her heavenly Father on January 5, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Walter Vincent Raczynski and Helen Dziubak Raczynski of Chicago. She will be lovingly missed by her husband of 56 years, Michael J. Wood Sr; children Ellie (Jim) Guetschow, Michael (Rachelle) Wood; grandchildren Kayleigh and Brandon Guetschow, Michael, Nathan, Madelynn and Alaina Wood.

Ellen was born in Chicago, Illinois. She attended Christ the King Grade School, Mother McAuley High School, and St. Xavier College, later earning her master’s degree from the University of Illinois. Upon graduation, she taught high school mathematics in Chicago, Illinois and Dayton, Ohio and later continued her passion for education while teaching in Spain.

She met the love of her life in St. Louis on a blind date, offering him a simple tour of the town. She had no way of knowing that this small gesture would become the first step in a lifetime of adventures. For the next 56 years, they explored the world side by side—living abroad in Spain (thanks to the U.S.A.F.), wandering through Europe, and taking spontaneous road trips across the Midwest. Wherever they went, life was grand, and together they collected memories that would last forever.

Ellen will be remembered for her unwavering Catholic faith and the deep love she held for her husband, children, grandchildren, and friends. A passionate gourmet cook, she joined Gourmet clubs wherever she and Mike made their home, delighting in hosting memorable dinner parties. Wherever she resided, she found joy in welcoming others, by becoming an active member of Newcomers groups and later serving as President of the Grand Rapids Newcomers. She also had a gift for seeing beauty in the world around her, expressing it through her painting and photography.

Ellen lit up every room she entered—Christmas gatherings, parties, dinners out with family and friends. No matter how busy life became, she always made space for fun, laughter, and the people she loved. We will miss her kindness, her quick wit, her hugs, her sparkling personality, and the advice she offered so freely. To everyone who knew Ellen, Nostrovia.
