Elsworth Reyburn “Pop Pop” and “Papa” Smith, born on October 9, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, ascended to his heavenly Father on September 1, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. He was the son of the late Elsworth Fayssoux Smith and Helen Reyburn Smith. He was predeceased by his sister Sunie Cabanne Smith and brother James Sheppard Smith, of St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated from St. Louis University, and then served his country in the United States Marine Corps.
His professional endeavors included long and illustrious careers with General Motors, Benteler Automotive, Wolverine Worldwide, and Berkeley Hall. These professions allowed him and his family opportunities to reside in numerous locales throughout Michigan, Missouri, New York and South Carolina. Though his journey took him to many places, Elzey remained a steadfast presence, like an oak tree whose roots remain firm despite the consistently changing landscapes. His resolute nature provided a constant source of strength and stability for his family through all the transitions. Elzey had a passion for building his family’s homes that radiated warmth and hospitality, where friends and family were always welcomed with open arms. He loved hosting gatherings, creating spaces for parties and dinners that fostered unforgettable, lifelong memories.
After retiring to Bluffton, South Carolina, he enjoyed golfing, reading murder mystery novels, serving at The Church of the Cross, listening to his vast collection of records, experimenting with new recipes, gardening, and catering to his wife, Nancy. He also relished in spending quality time with his loving family. He was always meticulously dressed in his beautiful golf shirts of which many adored. He was happiest with a Coors in hand and beef tenderloin on his plate. His unwavering faith allowed him to battle serious medical issues and life challenges with courage and a smile. He embodied the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. He was the epitome of consistency, patience and honor. The world needs more men like Elzey.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Smith (Nee Falkenhainer), proud children Kurt Zeppenfeld (predeceased), Chris Zeppenfeld (Lori), Julie Brown, Sara Kurtz (Jeff), and grandchildren Kristopher, Katie, Kyle, Jamie, and Courtney Zeppenfeld, Cameron Brown, Mallory Schierbeek (Nick), Anna and Payton Kurtz, and granddogs Remy, Roo, Skully, Moose, and Miso. The family will be holding a celebration of life in Elzey’s honor on a yet to be determined date during the winter holiday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, South Carolina 29910.
