Hugh N. Barnard

Hugh N. Barnard passed away on Thursday September 19, 2024 at the age of 92.  He was born on July 15, 1932 in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late Hawley and Dorothy Barnard.  He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 60 years, Marilyn, sons Jeffrey (Karen) Barnard, Brooks (Katherine) Barnard and grandsons Zeb, Wes and Ben.  He was preceded in death by his sister Shirley Jacobson. 

Hugh graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Civil Engineering, was a member of Delta Upsilon Fraternity and also received his MBA from Ashland University.  He was a registered Professional Engineer and was an engineer for many years with Cummins and Barnard Inc. in Ann Arbor.  He concluded his career with several engineering firms in Grand Rapids.  Hugh was a life member of ASHRAE, a member of National Society of Professional Engineers, and a registered engineer in several states.

He was a long-time member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a Deacon and Elder, was a financial supporter of many civic causes, and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker football fan.   Hugh was also a life-long swimming enthusiast.  He lettered in swimming at the University of Nebraska and competed in Masters Swimming in later years.  Hugh was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Friday September 27, 2024 at 11am at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church, 7495 Cascade Rd. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Forest Hills Presbyterian Church Music Program.
