James Baldwin Johnson “Jimmy” passed away peacefully on August 3, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Carl and Peg Johnson of Charlevoix, and his beloved dogs Nellie and Emmie.
Jim is survived by his wife Julie, children John and Johanna, and grandchildren Johnny, Quinn and Winter. Also surviving are his brothers Jeff (Jan) and Chris (Cindy), cousin Phil (Brenda) and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Jim was born in Detroit on June 30, 1945. He moved to Grand Rapids at age 1, where he resided until his death.
Jimmy attended Forest Hills High School and graduated in 1963.
He graduated from Northwestern University in 1967. Upon graduation, Jim was a teacher at Central High School in Grand Rapids. While there, he coached swimming and baseball. Jim graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1975. While in Ann Arbor, he became a member of the house at 619 South Division, along with many Grand Rapids friends.
Jim practiced law for over 40 years, especially dedicated to his work through juvenile court. He was very fortunate to have his associate and friend Connie Lemmink with him for those years. He worked from his law office in Eastown, which was conveniently located a few doors down from Yesterdog, Jim’s favorite was the killer dog.
Jim loved music and was a member of the Fabulous Eastones. Many will remember his vocals on Brown Eyed Girl. He competed in and won may triathlons, swimming in Lake Michigan and Reeds Lake and often trained in Lake Charlevoix which he loved. He also was a super uncle and supporter of his nieces and nephews sports and interests.
Not too many were able to beat Jimmy in Ping Pong, which he played on Monday nights with his friends; hence the name “The King” (mostly due to his killer backhand).
Thanks and gratitude are extended by the family for the fine care Jim received from all of the staff at Holland Home/Cook Center. A special thank you goes to Bhesh and Aubrey for their kindness, patience and willingness to get to know Jim for the unique and talented person he was. He will be missed.
At Jim’s request, there will be no service. Memorial donations can be made, in his name, to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). 180 Ottawa Avenue NW Suite 5200, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
