Janice Slater

Janice Linda Johnson Slater passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Monday, March 17, 2025, at the age of 93.

Janice was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 29, 1931 at home on 68th Street and resided in the Grand Rapids and Ada area her entire life. Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Russell Elias Slater, her son, Royce Slater, her parents, Hjalmer Lester Johnson and Elsa Kristina Lindberg Johnson, her infant sister, Donna Johnson, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Connie Johnson, former sister-in-laws, Dorrie Johnson, Tom and Phyllis Johnson, Ken and Jackie Johnson, Steve and Nancy Johnson, Edith and Vern Marihugh, Elmo and Louise Slater, Thelma and Bob Shears, Ray and Sophie Slater, and Pattymae and Bob Carlson.

Janice had a deep love for playing the piano and took great pride in competing at St. Cecilia during her younger years. She was also proud of her time as a synchronized swimmer, impressing others with her ability to hold her breath underwater for extended periods. Ice skating was another passion of hers, and she eagerly awaited the winter freeze so she could glide across the frozen lakes and ponds.

An avid traveler, Janice embraced adventures around the world, creating cherished memories with her husband and children. She was a natural conversationalist, believing that everyone was simply a friend she hadn’t met yet. As a church greeter, she took joy in welcoming others, always introducing herself and her family to those around her.

Above all, Janice deeply loved her family. She had a knack for organizing and made sure everyone had a role to play in her home, ensuring that each of us knew our responsibilities over the past few years.

She is survived by her three children, Russ and Lori Slater, Don and Sue Slater, Laurie and Jerry Boomers;  ten grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren: Ryan and Hillary Slater (Levi and Titus), Erica and Gerrod Truckenmiller (Wes and Hazel), Caroline and Tucker Wheeler (Slater), Anne Slater, Royce and Eleanor Slater (Eli), Audrey and Chris Townes (Jaslyn and Landon), Jerry Lee Boomers III (JB IV, Elijah, and Rylan), Veronica and David DeMeester (Austen and Peyton), Brittany Boomers, and Wyatt Slater; 28 beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Sunday March 23, 2025, from 3:30pm to 5:30pm at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Rd. SE Grand Rapids. The Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 24, 2025, at Ada Bible Church - Cascade, 8899 Cascade Rd. SE, Ada, at 11:00am, with visitation one hour prior to the service time.
