Jean Kennaugh Obituary

Jean Ann Kennaugh, age 88, of Grand Rapids, Michigan passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Tuesday, January 23, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Kennaugh, in 2012. Jean was born in Aurora, IL and attended North Central College where she met John. They were married for 62 years and are survived by daughter, Carole Jean Dow (David) of Newaygo, MI; son, John A. Kennaugh (Kris) of Lansing, MI; daughter, Laurie Ann Broughan (Robert) of Sacramento, CA; son, Paul Floyd Kennaugh (Amy) of Eaton Rapids, MI and her brother, Richard Hitchcock (Nancy) of Pt. Charlotte, FL. She also has five grandchildren, Jason, Jodi, Toby, Bobby and Kelly; nine great-grandchildren, Taylor, Michael, Matthew, Adriana, Christian, Abby, Caitlin, Genevieve and Nicholas. Jean had many interests including sewing, needlework, knitting, reading, gardening, swimming, camping, boating and waterskiing. She was a lifeguard, a synchronized swimmer and taught many how to water ski. But her greatest love was her music. She played piano, guitar, recorder and hand bells. She directed vocal and hand bell choirs. She shared her love of music with all ages, directing musicals and serving as musical director at many United Methodist camps including Wesley Woods, Crystal Springs, and Lakeview Family Camp. Her favorite place to sing was around the campfire. She listened to classical music but it was the spirituals, camp songs, folk songs and hillbilly hoedowns that she enjoyed the most with family and friends in the great outdoors. Jean was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodists Church where she sang in the choir, served on numerous boards and was a Stephen Minister. She also served as a mentor for students at Hamilton Elementary School. She loved board games, Meijer Gardens and the Tigers. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24 th. in the Clark Retirement Community Chapel, 1551 Franklin St. SE, Grand Rapids with the Reverend Erin Fitzgerald of St. Paul's UMC officiating.
