John Smith Obituary

John Hough Smith died on November 19, 2018 at the age of 88.  The son of Edwin Merle and Ivaleen Hough Smith, he was born and raised in Grand Rapids.  He attended Central High School, Grand Rapids Junior College, the University of Michigan, and the University of Michigan Medical School.  He completed a Master of Science in radiology at the University of Minnesota and took his radiology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.  He served as a Medical Officer and Captain in the US Army.  In 1952 he married Barbara DeYoung, and they raised three daughters.  John practiced radiology at Blodgett Hospital until 1981.   After John’s and Barbara’s marriage ended, he moved to Coral Springs, Florida, where he resided until his death.  John is survived by his children: Susette (Mark Driscoll) Smith of Boston, Laurel (James) Harris of Bloomfield Hills, and Mary (Nelson) Wilner of Grand Rapids, his grandchildren: Jim Harris, Julie Harris, Benjamin Wilner, and Anna Wilner, and his siblings: Edwin Smith of Ann Arbor and Frances (George) Smolak of Strongsville OH, and numerous nieces and nephews.  John will be buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Grand Rapids.
