John VanderWilp, a loyal husband, proud father, loving Opa, and faithful servant of Christ, was welcomed home on January 20, following a traumatic brain injury. His life was a testament to the power of faith, love, and resilience.
Preceded in death by his parents, Klaas and Rena VanderWilp; brother, Rick; and daughter, Kristie; John is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Renee; son, Michael (Zeke and Clyde); son, David and wife Tanya (Natalie, Ashley, Bryce); and daughter, Jessica.
John's love for his family was evident in the way he provided for them. The moment a need arose, whether it be a material item, helping hand, word of wisdom, or lighthearted joke, -solicited or not- John was sure to deliver. Yet, his care extended far beyond his family circle. As a Vietnam veteran and recovering alcoholic, John mentored many, sharing his wisdom, experience, and faith, to help others navigate life's challenges. As a general contractor, he employed many, some of whom were struggling to find work, and always saw the best in people.
Despite facing numerous sorrows, including the loss of his young daughter to homicide, John's deep faith in Christ Jesus sustained him. He radiated joy, love, and positivity to all who knew him. His smile, hearty laugh, much needed hugs, witty and often unfiltered remarks, refreshed the hearts of many weary souls.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to everyone who supported John throughout his life and during his final days.
The visitation will be held at Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road SE, on Monday January 27, from 4-7pm. A celebration of John's life will be held at Ada Bible Church Cascade Campus, 8899 Cascade Rd SE, on Tuesday January 28, 2025 at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Samaritan’s Purse.
