Ken VanSolkema Obituary

Kenneth J. VanSolkema passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was 83 years old. Born in Grand Rapids to John and Hazel VanSolkema.

Ken was a devoted husband, father, papa, great-papa, brother, and friend. He shared 61 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Robalyn “Robbie” Rose VanSolkema. He is also survived by his children: Tad, Marc (Nancy), Ryan (Vicki) and Scot (Jessica). He was a proud grandfather to Cassidy, Zach, Bella, Courteney, Autumn, Zoe and Maizy, and great-grandfather to Charlie.  He is also survived by his siblings: Jim (Barb) VanSolkema, Linda (Don) Dawson, Nancy (Robert) VanderHave, John (Deb) VanSolkema and Steve VanSolkema.

Ken proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, a chapter of his life that reflected his sense of duty and quiet strength.

Ken was truly the best kind of family man—gentle, kind, and always present for the people he loved. He found his greatest joy in spending time with his family, especially watching his grandchildren perform, whether on the ice or on the stage.

He had a love for travel and for the game of golf, where his favorite course was always the one he was playing that day—especially if he was playing alongside Robbie. For Ken, golf wasn’t about competition; it was about being together and enjoying the moment. He was also known for his love of cooking, often bringing people together around the table with meals made with care.

When his boys were young, Ken was a dedicated coach in their lives, generously giving his time to coach various sports and teach lessons that extended far beyond the game.

Ken devoted 45 years of service to General Motors and Delphi Automotive, where he was affectionately known as “the Sheriff”—a reflection of both his leadership and the respect he earned from those around him.

At home, Ken was known for the little things that made him uniquely him—like vacuuming the carpets every single day and taking pride in a clean house. It was one of the many quiet ways he showed his care and love for his family.

Ken’s legacy is one of kindness, consistency, and devotion. He made a lasting impact on everyone who knew him, and he will be remembered for his gentle spirit and the steady presence he brought into the lives of others.
