Marcia I. Hammerslag

Marcia Irvine Hammerslag of East Grand Rapids passed away on May 29, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born to Lila (Seydel) Irvine and Robert Irvine on January 11, 1935 in Alhambra, California.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Lila, and her baby brother James.

She is survived by her children, Tom Hammerslag and his wife, Carole, of Grand Rapids and Anne Barnett and her husband, Mike, of Bend, Oregon; her grandchildren, Lydia and William Hammerslag and Carole’s children, Claire, Jon and Julia Cotts as well as many treasured friends and family, especially her dear friend Eleanor Buggeln.

Marcia found her greatest joy in time spent with her family, tending her gardens, spending summers on her beloved boat Audacitor in Grand Haven, world travels and Olli classes at Aquinas College. 

She was known for her bright smile, gentle spirit, kind words and the ability to make everyone that she ever met laugh. She will be deeply missed by her family, dear friends and the communities at both Clark Retirement and the Grand Haven Yacht Club.

A Celebration of Marcia’s life will be held at the Sweet House, 254 Fulton SE, Grand Rapids, on Tuesday, June 30, at 2 p.m. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Sweet House Foundation, Emmanuel Hospice or a charity of your choice.  Marcia’s family extends heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at Clark and Emmanuel Hospice, whose care made her life immeasurably better over the past two years.
