Marguerite Donahue Obituary

Marguerite J. Donahue passed away peacefully on February 11 after a long and full life at the age of 98. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rudolf and Mel Meinke, and siblings Raymond, Jimmy, Gertrude, and Dorothy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roderick K. Donahue.

Mom moved from Nebraska to Grand Rapids in her early twenties. She was an impeccable homemaker, and always ready to greet guests with a freshly baked treat. She was a long time member of East Congregational Church and the Blodgett Babies Welfare Guild, where she participated in the annual charity fashion shows. Marguerite enjoyed her time as a member of Cascade Country Club, golfing with her husband, and enjoyed a weekly bridge game well into her nineties. Her longevity can be attributed to daily bike rides or walks around her neighborhoods, and later classes at the YMCA which she attended until her mid-nineties and made many new friends in her later years. She loved a good party, dancing at Sandy Pointe, and celebrating the holidays with a glass of Canadian Club over ice with a splash of water. Christmas morning without her homemade pecan rolls will never be the same, but will serve as an inspiration for all our family members who inherited her sweet tooth.

She was a long time employee of the Siegel Jewelry Company, holding several positions. She took great pride in building her clientele and helping them to select the perfect piece of jewelry to celebrate life’s special occasions.  A special thank you to Jim and Joel Siegel for their families friendship over the many years.

The highlight of her golden years were grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved following their activities and dreams, and took tremendous pride in their accomplishments. To quote her granddaughter, ”She had a willingness to say yes to life and take a chance on what is next. I’d like to think we all learned that, in some way, from Nanny.”

She will be deeply missed by her family and their partners; Kimberly and Bruce Blackmore, Patricia and Greg Rhodes, Nancy and Bob Lundquist. Her grandchildren and their partners, Samatha and Kyle Verplank, and their children Brooklyn and Rhodes, Kelly and Fred Millett, Charlie Rhodes and Greg Epstein, Bob and Taylor Lundquist and son Will, Mike Lundquist and Clare Reidy. A special thank you to the Heather Hills Retirement Home for their care and companionship.

A family celebration of life will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Camp Blodgett in honor of Marguerite's memory.
