Marianne Veit

Michigan Marianne Veit (nee DeWeese), age 87, died last Saturday at the Porter Hills Village in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Marianne was active in Grand Rapids educational, environmental and charitable causes for decades. In her most prominent role, she served for 10 years as Secretary of the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation, an organization she supported right up to her death. During her tenure she campaigned for the first millage that now supports the library directly, rather than being dependent on the Grand Rapids City budget. Her interest in environmental causes were wide and varied, first as a founding member of the Western Michigan Environmental Action Council, then with the Michigan Nature Conservancy, the Audubon Society, and the North Country Trail Association. Closer to home, she was a collector and distributor for the Creston Food Pantry, run by ACCESS of West Michigan, and joined those guilds involved in charitable activities at Fountain Street Church, where she was a life member. She had also been a member and contributor of many other organizations which engaged her sympathies or interest, among them Planned Parenthood, Progressive Women's Alliance of West Michigan, Opera Grand Rapids, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and the Women's City Club. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Werner Veit, former President of Booth Newspapers and Publisher and Editor of the Grand Rapids Press; son, Anthony (Nancy) Veit, daughters Tamilyn Kraeger and Andrea (Michael) Schreiber; granddaughters Allison (Jake) Fox, Carrie (Kevin) Porter, Whitney (Andrew) McGoram, Victoria (Nick) Gottschlich, Emily (Max Rosenberg) Schreiber, Isabel (Tom Corrigan) Schreiber, and four great grandchildren with three more on the way. A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 1pm at Fountain Street Church. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to ACCESS of West Michigan or the Grand Rapids Public Library Foundation.
