Marie Canepa Obituary

Marie O. Canepa, 90, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday December 14, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Charles Canepa (2018). Marie will be lovingly remembered by her four children, 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Daughter Claudia Wong (Stanley), son John Canepa (Ellen), son Peter Canepa (Kim) and daughter Milissa Agnello (Michael), grandson Wesley Wong (Jaime), granddaughter Samantha Wong, grandson John Canepa, granddaughter Leigh Ann Canepa, grandson Cameron Canepa, granddaughter Nicole Canepa, grandson Peter Canepa, granddaughter Christina Canepa, granddaughter Allison Agnello, granddaughter Emily Agnello, granddaughter Michelle Agnello, great granddaughter Riley Wong, great grandson Lucas Wong and great grandson Max Wong.

Marie was born on September 16, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Newburyport, Massachusetts as an only child to Philomena and Elmer Olney. Marie met her husband of 65 years as students at Newburyport High School and were married upon John’s graduation from Harvard University and her graduation from Burdett College. Marie and John moved numerous times as John served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and pursued his career in banking and Marie raised their four children. Marie and John settled into East Grand Rapids in 1970 and once their last child graduated from high school, Marie completed her education by graduating from Grand Valley State University in 1981. She went on to become a substitute teacher in the East Grand Rapids school system. Marie had a week-long 90th birthday celebration this past summer in Glen Arbor with all four of her children and many of her grandchildren. Marie was a friend to everyone she met and was committed to making Grand Rapids a great city for everyone. Alongside her husband, she was involved with many civic and charitable organizations which had a significant effect on the quality of life in Grand Rapids. Marie will be deeply missed by her large family and many friends.
