Martheen Clock Wanty grew up in Grand Rapids and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1947. She then attended Milwaukee Downer (now Lawrence) in Wisconsin and then became one of the first women to graduate from the University of Michigan’s School of Business in 1951.
She married Thomas Cooley Wanty Jr in December, 1951 and they settled in East Grand Rapids where they raised two children and built many lasting friendships. Martheen was a local legend at knitting and relished her weekly bridge games. For over six decades, she volunteered at Blodgett Hospital and Mayflower Church. She and Tom loved to travel in the US and abroad, joined by friends or just making more friends.
She is survived by her children Virginia and Thomas III (Mary Ellen); grandchildren Nicole (Chris Beale) and Thomas IV; and nephew Steve (Mimi) Fentress. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Elizabeth Clock, her husband Tom, and her sister Mary Anne Clock Bogue.
Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road SE. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, May 2, at Mayflower Congregational Church, 2345 Robinson Rd SE.
