Michael Douglas Helsel, aged 68, passed away at his beloved Up North cabin on February 24, 2025. Mike is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lynn, and his two sons, Andrew and Maxwell. Mike, the eldest, is survived by his five brothers: Patrick, Steven (Tammy), Mark (Dawn), Todd, and Ryan (Angie). In addition, he is survived by his uncles, Dick (Lois) Wittkowski and David (Vivan) Wittkowski. Mike's parents, Douglas and Joanne Helsel, predeceased him.
Mike was a man of broad and deep curiosities and interests. He read world history while also exploring the cultural history of the American West, a lifelong fascination. Mike was a passionate hunter and fisherman with a concomitant commitment to being a good steward of God's creation. Every year, Mike looked forward to deer season with his longtime friends Tom and Jim Velte, his brother Pat, and Uncle Dave.
In his younger years, Mike loved playing basketball, even participating in the storied Gus Macker tournament. As a student and graduate of Michigan State University, Mike was proud to be a Spartan, both in terms of his academic life and as an ardent MSU sports fan.
In his professional life, Mike excelled as a human relations professional. He sincerely enjoyed working with people and was dedicated to helping employees thrive in their careers.
However, Mike's most important role was as a husband and family man. He deeply loved his wife, Mary Lynn, and their two sons, Andrew and Max. He delighted in spending time and making memories with Mary Lynn and the boys. Andrew and Max were his best friends, and he joined them in their individual interests and avocations. Another family member to whom Mike was devoted was his dog Reby, whom he loved unconditionally.
Essentially, Mike was a man with a resolute faith in the saving grace and love of Jesus. Mike was a true Christian and beloved child of the Creator God. He will be deeply missed.
The Funeral Service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
