Mort Finkelstein

Mort Finkelstein of Grand Rapids and Boca Raton, FL. passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Gen Finkelstein, his brother Ed Finkelstein and his first wife Bobbie Finkelstein & nephews Scot & Ricky Finkelstein. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Peg; children: Debbie Wiegand (Mike), David Finkelstein, Pam Willemstein (Rick), Chad Jackiewicz (Christine), & Megan Yost (Jason), grandchildren: Heather Springett, Jason Wiegand, Caitlin Wernet, Ryan Willemstein, Cody, Adam & Heidi Jackiewicz, Tristyn Vining, and Jacob & Lily Yost; and great grandchildren: Henry & Jack Springett, and Charlotte Wiegand.

He was born in Grand Rapids, and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. Mort worked with his parents in the family business at Michigan Clothiers. Later known as MC Sporting Goods. In January of 1949 he enlisted in the Air Force. When he returned to GR, he took over running one of the family stores. He continued to help it grow along with his parents and brothers, Raleigh & Ed. Over many years the brothers took over the parents’ small clothing company and turned it into a substantial regional and national sporting goods chain. Mort was an avid sportsman and athlete. His first love was golf, then hunting & skiing. Mort belonged to Temple Emanuel’s Jewish Reform Congregation. From a young age, he committed himself to improving the Jewish community by giving of himself both locally and nationally. Mort accepted the Chairmanship of Temple Emanuel’s Cemetery Committee eight years ago, refurbishing it to its original grandeur. He was actively involved until just weeks ago. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday, August 20, 2023 at Temple Emanuel, 1715 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids MI 49503.  Internment will take place proceeding the service at Oak Hill cemetery, at 603 Hall Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49507.  The family will return to Temple Emanuel to honor Mort with light refreshments.
