On the evening of Tuesday, February 4th, 2025, Nancy Sue “Mimi”, “Mom-Mom” Smith Nee Falkenhainer, peacefully passed surrounded by loved ones in Grand Rapids, MI. Nancy was 91 years old.
Nancy was the daughter of Norman and Virginia Linde Falkenhainer. She was predeceased by her son Richard “Kurt” Zeppenfeld, husband Elsworth Reyburn Smith, and brother Robert “Bobby” Falkenhainer.
Nancy was born in St. Louis, a city she adored. She later moved to Michigan where she lovingly designed several homes and adored her 25 years of styling clients at Jacobson’s. Her family and friends fondly remember summers spent in Grand Haven, Spring Breaks in Marco Island, and dinners at Cascade Roadhouse.
Nancy wasn’t just the life of the party - she was the party. She was one of a kind and left a remarkable impression on everyone she met. She was the epitome of charisma and had impeccable taste. She had an infectious charm which lit up every room. She had an unmatched wit, humor, grace, and unwavering determination to do things “her way.” Her boundless love for her family was unforgettable. To spend an evening with her meant you would be treated to an occasion full of laughter, fun and love. Her presence was truly a present to those around her.
She was the Matriarch of our wonderful family, and was blessed with an array of talent, including a sharp ear for music. She could play nearly any tune on the piano by ear—a truly special and rare gift. She loved spending time with family and her numerous loving friends, and seldom missed a happy hour. Nancy’s love, passion and tenderness helped shape every member of her family. We are all so proud to be a part of her family, and we know she will be with each of us always and forever. She has forever filled our hearts with love and joy.
She is survived by her children Chris Zeppenfeld (Lori), Julie Brown, Sara Kurtz (Jeff), and grandchildren Kristopher, Katie, Kyle, Jamie, and Courtney Zeppenfeld, Cameron Brown, Mallory Schierbeek (Nick), Anna and Payton Kurtz.
A Celebration of Life will be held near her beloved Church of the Cross in Bluffton, South Carolina with all of her Family- just as she wished- this Summer!
