Norman Shaughnessy Obituary

Norman Bert Shaughnessy, age 81, passed away peacefully at home on February 2, 2026, after a courageous struggle with multiple health issues, lovingly cared for throughout by his wife, Sharon. He was born March 13, 1944, in Battle Creek, Michigan, to Norman William and Maxine Shaughnessy.

After graduating from Battle Creek Central High School in 1962, Norm attended Michigan State University, earning a B.A. in Business Administration. His studies were interrupted by service in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968, including deployment with the 4th Infantry Division in Pleiku, South Vietnam.
Norm was a humble, kind man who found his greatest joy in sharing life and the outdoors with his wife, Sharon. He loved reading and writing and carried that passion into their many camping trips across numerous states and winters spent in Florida, faithfully recording each adventure in his handwritten camping logbooks—sometimes, he would admit with a smile, embellishing the stories just a little.

Norm and Sharon shared a deep love for Michigan, its four seasons, and especially downhill skiing, along with volleyball, dancing, and time spent with close friends. Even as his health changed, Norm continued to embrace life without complaint, filling their 26 years together with adventures such as kayaking, horseback riding, white-water rafting, sand dune rides, and roller coasters. Known for his dry sense of humor, gentle teasing, and quiet humility, Norm was happiest outdoors—whether splitting wood at a campsite with a steady, perfect rhythm, then sitting back contentedly as Sharon built the fire.

Norm’s professional life was spent as a self-employed remodeling contractor, and he was a licensed builder for 30 years. He was also a 30-year member of the National Ski Patrol and enjoyed ice hockey, rollerblading, biking, dancing, and traveling in their RV. Norm volunteered his time helping elementary school children strengthen their reading skills, supporting Santa Claus Girls, and performing maintenance work for his church.

Norm is survived by his wife, Sharon Krieger Shaughnessy; his sons, Timothy Michael Shaughnessy (Amy) and Brent Scott Shaughnessy (Sara); and his stepchildren, William Krieger (Sydney), John Krieger (Kat), and Karen Krieger. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Michael, Gabriel, Mark and Matthew Shaughnessy and Brennan, Julia, Jackson and Taylor Krieger; great grandchildren Melah and Dotti; his brother, Mark Shaughnessy (Greg); and many beloved nieces, nephews, and their children.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbors, and especially to Vic and Craig Johnson, for the care, support, and compassion they showed Norm and our family in the days leading up to his passing.

In lieu of flowers, Norm asked that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Wounded Warriors.

A celebration of Norm's life is planned for this Summer 2026.
