Patricia (Barnes) Burpee

Patricia (Barnes) Burpee, born October 31, 1922, and a lifelong resident of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully at Clark Retirement Community on April 25, 2022.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Russ Burpee. She is survived by her children, John/Kathleen Burpee (West Bloomfield, Michigan), Ralph/Rita Burpee (Greer, South Carolina), Chuck/Mary Jo Burpee (Grand Rapids), and Linda Burpee/Sara Smolenski (Grand Rapids).  She is further survived by 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.  Pat was an excellent cook and a gracious host, and she enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home and at the family cottage on Silver Lake.  Her chocolate chip cookies were legendary. She was athletic, especially enjoying ping-pong, tennis, and water aerobics. She was active in lifelong service to Trinity United Methodist Church and PEO.  She was the consummate grandmother, always sharing her love of nature, her inquisitive mind, and time at the lake with her grandchildren.  The funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, April 30, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1100 Lake Drive SE, with Rev. Edward A. Perkins officiating.  The service will be followed by a lunch reception at the church and then a graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm on Friday at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Clark Retirement Community or Trinity United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
