Patricia J. Flaherty, age 78, of Grand Rapids, MI passed away from Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS) on May 1, 2026.
Patricia was born on April 9, 1948, to Constance and Anthony (Larry) Flaherty. She was raised in East Grand Rapids and went on to pursue her passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University in 1971. She later continued her artistic education at Kendall College of Art & Design, further developing the creative foundation that would define her life’s work.
Patricia dedicated her career to both art and education, teaching in schools in Chicago and Minneapolis before returning to Grand Rapids in 1978. She was deeply committed to helping students discover their creativity and develop confidence through artistic expression. In addition to her work in the classroom, she contributed to curriculum development and led a variety of creative programs that enriched the educational experience of her students.
A gifted and prolific artist, Patricia worked across a range of mediums, including painting, drawing, watercolor, printmaking, and design. She exhibited her artwork in ArtPrize for ten years and received recognition for her creative contributions, including the Hendrickson Award for Creative Expression in 2009 and the Conrad Award for Outstanding Creative Expression in 2018. Her artistic work often reflected her appreciation for nature, frequently capturing beach scenes, flowers, and natural landscapes.
Patricia had a lifelong love for the arts beyond the visual. She had a deep appreciation for ballet and music, and enjoyed dancing, fitness, and skiing. She was also an avid reader and had a strong interest in calligraphy. She found joy in cooking and baking, and had a special love for horses and horseback riding. She was a member of the Alliance Française in Grand Rapids and remained engaged in cultural and artistic communities throughout her life.
Above all, Patricia will be remembered for her creativity, kindness, and genuine interest in others. She deeply valued her family and always took great joy in hearing about their lives and the accomplishments of the next generation.
She is survived by her brother, Tony Flaherty (Denise), her sister, Diane Flaherty Cisler and her many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Flaherty, and her parents, Constance and Anthony “Larry” Flaherty. She is also remembered by her extended family, friends, and former students.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to her niece, Cynthia Gauyan (née Flaherty), the caregivers at Porter Hills and the Emmanuel Hospice Team for their compassionate care, support and dedication.
A private service will be held for close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation.
