Paul Conway Hayes passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on Friday, January 5, 2024 at the age of 71.
Paul was born in Detroit, Michigan on March 22, 1952 to Wallace and Gayle Hayes. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of forty-eight years, Martha Hayes, children Ryan Hayes, Paul Hayes, and John Hayes, daughters in-law Amanda Hayes, Cathy Hayes, and Jillian Hayes, grandchildren Michael Hayes, Zoey Hayes, Jack Hayes, and Cordelia Hayes, brothers Ken Hayes, Dan Hayes, and Tom Hayes, good friend Heidi Klees, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Paul was preceded in death by Wallace and Gayle Hayes.
Paul enjoyed a distinguished career in finance which led him and his family throughout the Midwest and eventually back to Michigan. Throughout it all, he loved playing weekly basketball games, going to the movie theatre, and traveling to Ann Arbor for fall football Saturdays as a season ticket holder for his beloved Michigan Wolverines.
In his later years Paul courageously battled Inclusion Body Myositis--a form of adult-onset muscular dystrophy. He met this challenge for over 20 years by dedicating himself to his mind and body, and to daily exercise. He visited the Mary Free Bed YMCA often, with workouts famously running long because of his knack for socializing between sets.
Paul also became a tireless advocate for others with disabilities and he taught us all how to accept an impossible circumstance with remarkable grace.
He was a devout Catholic and took great comfort in his relationship with the Church and with God. What he loved most was experiencing the simple joys of life with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday January 12, 2024 at 11am at St. Robert of Newminster Catholic Church, 6477 Ada Dr. SE, Ada, MI 49301 with Fr. Logan Weber as Celebrant. Visitation will be at the church from 10-11 am. A lunch will also be held at the church following Mass to further celebrate Paul's life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mary Free Bed YMCA in Forest Hills, Michigan.
