Rita S. Higgins

Rita Simons Higgins passed away on February 6, 2026, at the age of 73.  She was born in Grand Rapids on February 5, 1953, to the late John and Alta Simons. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 50 years Thomas Higgins, along with her family and many friends.

Philanthropy played a large role in Rita’s life. She always thought of other people’s needs first. Rita had a special place in her heart for vulnerable animals. Although she did not recently have dogs as part of her family, she was passionate about giving abandoned dogs a second chance. Cats were always an important part of her life. Wherever she is now, she will be happy having Violet on her lap purring throughout eternity. Women’s rights and equal respect were very important to her.  Rita was a loving wife, aunt, and friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held.  Memorial contributions in her name may be made to Volunteers of Muskegon County Animal Control (Pound Buddies) and Planned Parenthood of Michigan.
