Roger Allen Bera was born on January 30, 1947, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He married the love of his life, Cindy, on August 10, 1967, and together they made East Grand Rapids their home for more than fifty years, building a life centered on family, friendship, and community.
Roger graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, attended Michigan State University, and earned his degree from Grand Valley State University. He began his professional life as a sixth grade teacher at Oakdale Elementary School, where he spent ten years shaping young minds and touching countless lives, work that reflected his patience, humor, and deep belief in people.
He later transitioned into property management, overseeing restaurants, including The Press Club of Grand Rapids, as well as many apartments and condominiums throughout the years. Roger served as President of the Institute of Real Estate Management, West Michigan Chapter, and concluded his career as a Broker at Grandmark Property Management, where he was respected for both his leadership and integrity.
Roger was preceded in death by his father, Henry Ozro “Ozzie” Bera; his mother, Anita Bera; and his brother, Ronald Bera. He is survived by his tireless and devoted wife, Cindy; his children and twelve cherished grandchildren: Stephanie Meston (Joe, Max and Rachel), Matthew (Terrie) Bera (Henry, Olivia and Charlie), Alison (Dean) Cappellazzo (Gino, Isabella and Rocco), and Kate (John) Schneider (Jack, Emma and Hank).
Though Roger’s body eventually succumbed to complications from kidney disease, his mind remained sharp, funny, caring—and yes, even a bit critical—until the very end. He loved a good party, a good conversation, and the people he held close. The family will greet visitors on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 2pm to 5pm at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, Inc. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Feeding America or a charity of your choice.
