Sandra Lynn Burns, a compassionate soul whose generosity and adventurous spirit touched countless lives, passed away peacefully on Saturday November 1, 2025 at the age of 89.
Born on February 16, 1936, in Sturgis, Michigan, Sandy lived a life defined by kindness, curiosity, and an unshakable love for the world around her. A devoted Christian, she dedicated her time and heart to numerous charitable causes, always seeking ways to make life better for others. Whether volunteering with Meals on Wheels or supporting local and global charitable organizations, Sandy embodied the true meaning of giving.
An avid traveler, Sandy and her husband Gary found joy and inspiration in exploring the far corners of the world together. From cycling through the US and abroad to discovering quiet villages off the beaten path, she believed that every journey was an opportunity to learn, to connect, and to celebrate the beauty of life’s diversity.
Sandy will be lovingly remembered for her spirit, her laughter, and her unwavering belief in God. She is survived by her children Elizabeth Burns and her husband Tom Verkooijen, Jeffrey Burns and his wife Sherry Burns and her two grandchildren Hailey Burns and her husband Gavin van Oosterhout, and Paige Burns and her fiancée Aaron Calvillo, who will carry forward her legacy of compassion and curiosity.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Metcalf & Jonkhoff in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A visitation will be from 11:00am to 12:00pm, followed by the service at 12:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kids’ Food Basket, continuing her lifelong mission of helping others.
Sandy’s life journeys may have ended, but the paths she paved in love and kindness will endure forever.
